It has officially been a week since I have arrived in French Polynesia. Boy has the time flown by. I have had so many memorable moments in the first seven days and I really can't wait for the many more to come. Today was another day of firsts for me as I got the chance to see some other parts of the island that I hadn't seen before. We went to the west side of the island today to collect anemones for the Gump Reef project. On the way there and back we passed the old Club Med which was interesting. It looked in some parts as if it had been 50 years since it was open. Everything was overgrown and it looked like a forest where the resort used to be. The main entrance looked like something out of Jurassic park when they came back to the island just a complete mess. I didn't get a chance to take a picture but I'm sure I will get the chance eventually. After we transplanted the anemones on Gump Reef, I went out snorkeling with Tom to collect algae for one of the herbivorous fish feeding experiments. We went to collect Turbinaria and Sargassum to apply to treatments and controls for the experiment. It was cool getting the chance to be in the lagoon where the water is really shallow. The colors of the coral and fish stood out so vibrantly from the surface. We also went to the fore reef which was a little difficult. Getting there was like swimming upstream and when we got there, we were fighting to stay in one place to collect algae while wave after wave pushed us back away from the crest. We made some albacore for dinner tonight in fish tacos which were amazing. You can really tell the difference in taste due to how fresh it was. I then took the master diver test and now I'm in my room getting ready to go to bed. I have be out on the dock by 7:30 tomorrow morning to get a head start on attaching the algae we collected to the cages so I best go to bed. Until later.
